A Walking Tour

English Civil War Siege 1643 - 1644

The story of this protracted siege is told as a guided tour by using the exciting medium of Historical Interpretation, coupled with research and archived material from the National Records Archive.

Wardour Castle front   Royalist Mine   Wardour Castle rear

The English Civil War was the cause of the destruction of many fine castles in Britain, and today the ruins of Old Wardour Castle can be seen after this devastation of the great sieges of 1643 - 1644.

On May 2nd 1643, Sir Edward Hungerford, with his Parliamentarian Regiment of Foot demanded that the castle be handed over to his control. The owner, Lord Arundel, was away fighting for King Charles, but his wife of 61 years of age, together with the household and 25 trained fighting men refused them entry. Lady Blanche Arundel declared she would defend her Lord's home to her last breath.

The story of this siege, and the subsequent recapture by the family led Royalist forces in 1644 is told as a guided tour by The Pike And Shot Tour & event company, using both visual and verbal presentation.
