Step back in time to the 17th Century, and learn all about the English Civil War in Dorset and the secrets of
“The Crabchurch Conspiracy”

We can provide a walking tour around the Old Harbour to discover this lost battlefield of the English Civil War. Hidden amongst modern buildings of the 21st Century are the scars and memories of this forgotten conflict of February 1645. This 2 hour walking tour shows you the locations of the Weymouth & Melcombe Regis battlefields.
For the half day tour, we leave Brewers Quay on a boat trip to the Tudor Fortress of Portland Castle, one of the “keys” to the largest natural harbour in the England. We embark (weather permitting) to retrace the attempts by the Parliament Navy to capture the Castle, and discover a grisly secret of this terrible war hidden in the castle, which finally surrendered in April 1646, the last Castle in Dorset held for the King. We then return across the water following the route that one of the Royalist attacks that the Crabchurch Conspirators took and discover about the plot to retake control of the harbour and twin towns, following the route of the battles and siege of Weymouth and Melcombe Regis on a cold day in February over 360 years ago. The tour will end back at Brewers Quay
For the complete day tour, instead of returning by boat to Brewers Quay, we explore further on foot, taking the route over Chesil beach and the Fleet crossing, to discover how Portland Caste was tricked into surrender by the Royalists in 1643, and how a second group of Royalist soldiers marched past Wyke, capturing Sandsfoot Castle, before finally storming the town of Weymouth on the night of February 9th 1645, taking the Parliamentarian guards by complete surprise! So, come and join us and relive the daring plan to capture the Parliamentarian held Weymouth and Melcombe Regis for the King!
